A Perfect Weekend in San Antonio: Itinerary and Where to Stay

San Antonio is one of those cities where a long weekend is enough to feel like you have seen the highlights, but short enough that you have to make some choices. The Alamo and the River Walk are the anchors. The Pearl District and Southtown add depth. With a solid base, two and a half days covers the core well.

Friday afternoon: arrive and settle in

If you are flying in, San Antonio International Airport is easy to get out of quickly. Most vacation rentals are 15 to 25 minutes from the terminal depending on the neighborhood. Use Friday afternoon to check in, drop bags, find a grocery store if your rental has a kitchen, and let everyone in the group adjust to the city before the itinerary begins in earnest.

Evening: the River Walk at night is genuinely worth doing on arrival. Take a boat tour if the timing works (they run until 9 PM most evenings), walk the stretch from Rivercenter toward King William, and eat somewhere along the water. This gets the River Walk experience out of the way as a backdrop rather than the centerpiece it tends to become when you save it for later.

Saturday: the historic core and Southtown

Morning at the Alamo. It is easy to spend 90 minutes there between the chapel and the Long Barrack Museum, more if history is your focus. Walk south on Alamo Street to Market Square for breakfast or lunch, then east through HemisFair Park to see the Tower of the Americas.

Afternoon: cross into Southtown. South Alamo Street through the King William Historic District is one of the more architecturally interesting walks in the city. Stop at the Blue Star Arts Complex on the River Walk south end. Dinner in Southtown: restaurants along South Alamo and South St. Mary's Street are consistently good and less tourist-facing than the River Walk dining strip.

Sunday: the Pearl District and Mission Trail

Brunch at the Pearl. The Saturday and Sunday farmers market at the Pearl District runs 9 AM to 1 PM and is worth building Sunday morning around. The complex of restaurants, coffee shops, and shops along the converted brewery is one of the best urban spaces in San Antonio.

If you have a car and the afternoon, the San Antonio Missions UNESCO World Heritage Site is worth the drive south. Mission Concepcion and Mission San Jose are both compelling and often overlooked in favor of the Alamo.

Where to stay

La Maison Blount is five miles from downtown in a quiet neighborhood, 15 to 20 minutes from the River Walk. For a weekend trip centered on downtown San Antonio, it offers the kitchen, outdoor space, and parking that make a home base practical for a group arriving from a flight. For groups or families who want to be closer to the River Walk on foot, Halliday in the Riverside neighborhood and The Harding Place near downtown cut the drive time to 5 to 10 minutes.
