Housing Families During a PCS Move: Why More Space Matters More Than Location
A PCS with kids is not a vacation. What families actually need from short-term housing during a military move, and where to find it near San Antonio bases.
By Megan Blount ·
A PCS move with kids is one of the more demanding things a military family does on a regular basis. The kids are pulled from their schools and routines. Everything familiar is either in a shipping container or in a storage unit. The new city is unfamiliar. Parents are managing logistics, new unit check-ins, and finding schools simultaneously. The last thing anyone needs is a temporary housing situation that adds friction instead of removing it.
This is where the "location first" instinct can lead families astray. A conveniently located rental that is too small, does not have a kitchen, or puts kids in the same room as parents for six weeks is a harder experience than a less conveniently located rental that gives the family actual living space.
The space argument for PCS family housing
Kids need a bedroom that is theirs, even temporarily. Parents need a space where they can have adult conversations and handle admin without children in the room. Everyone needs a kitchen, because eating out for every meal with children is expensive and exhausting. These are not preferences, they are functional requirements for a stay that might run three to eight weeks.
The minimum for a family of four with two kids is three bedrooms: one for each child, one for the parents. Five is better when the kids are teenagers who need genuine separation. A single common living area works. Two is better for the weeks when everyone is stressed and needs a different room to decompress in.
Discovery Mill for larger families
Discovery Mill in Converse has five bedrooms, three baths, and a game room. For a family with three or four kids, this is one of the few short-term rental options near Randolph AFB that provides enough bedrooms without doubling up kids who would prefer their own space. It accepts pets, which removes the most common complication for military families who have dogs and cannot surrender them for the duration of a PCS transition.
Discovery Mill for families with older kids or teenagers
Discovery Mill has five bedrooms and a game room, which gives teenagers their own space without requiring them to be present for every adult conversation. The game room with pool and poker tables is a genuine entertainment option for kids who are bored during the weeks before school enrollment goes through.
Managing the timeline
PCS timelines almost never land exactly where the orders suggest. Build buffer into your rental booking. If your orders say you arrive the 15th, book from the 12th and through a week after the expected housing clearance date. The cost of extending a short-term rental stay by a few days is far lower than the stress of being without housing because clearance ran late.
All Hosted Havens properties support extended bookings and can often accommodate timeline shifts with advance notice. Confirm this directly before booking if your timeline has uncertainty built into it.
