Fall Travel in San Antonio: Events, Activities, and Where to Stay

San Antonio in the summer is hot. The River Walk is crowded. Hotel rates are at their peak, and every major attraction has a line. Fall changes all of that. Temperatures drop into the 70s and 80s by October. Crowds thin out. Prices follow. And the fall event calendar, from Dia de los Muertos celebrations to the Texas football season, gives the city a different energy than it has in the peak tourist months.

September through November: what the weather actually looks like

September in San Antonio still carries summer heat, with highs in the upper 80s to low 90s through mid-month. By late September, evenings become genuinely pleasant, which makes outdoor dining, River Walk walks, and park visits comfortable rather than something to manage around the heat. October averages highs in the low 80s and evenings in the 60s. November drops further into the 70s for daytime highs and the 50s at night.

For families traveling with kids, October and early November are the most comfortable window in the year: warm enough for outdoor activities, cool enough that no one is exhausted by the heat by noon.

Key fall events

Dia de los Muertos. San Antonio's celebration of Dia de los Muertos in late October and early November is one of the largest in Texas. The main events are centered on Market Square (El Mercado) and along the River Walk. The visual displays and cultural depth make it a destination event for visitors who plan specifically around it.

Texas football season. College and NFL games drive significant weekend travel to San Antonio, particularly UTSA home games at Alamodome. Weekends with home games see hotel rates spike and availability tighten. Vacation rentals outside the immediate downtown core hold steadier pricing during these weekends.

Fiesta de las Luminarias. In early December, the River Walk is lit with hundreds of luminarias for two consecutive weekends. Booking a late-fall trip that extends into early December to overlap with the Luminarias is a popular option for visitors who know about it in advance.

Where to stay for fall travel

The Harding Place near downtown puts you within range of River Walk events, Market Square, and the Alamo historic district. The front porch and outdoor spaces come into their own in fall temperatures when sitting outside in the evening is actually pleasant rather than just bearable.

Grass Hollow in Live Oak has a covered patio and a courtyard that benefit from the same seasonal shift. For family trips timed to fall weekends, the combination of outdoor space, a kids' bunk room, and proximity to northeast San Antonio parks makes it one of the better seasonal options.

Browse all San Antonio vacation rentals and book early for peak October and early November weekends, which fill months in advance.
